Propaganda War Poster Stationery and Invitations.

Description: V for Victory is a design based on propaganda posters from World War II. The phrases "Bring 'em Home" and "Buy War Bonds"' were commonly used during those times. Many people know the image of "Rosie the Riveter" who is an icon of the working women of those days who took men's jobs after they went off to war. The figure of this woman is meant to bring about that same iconography and the feelings of the important role women played during that conflict. The V in the Background stands for Victory and was another icon of the day.

History: In 1622, Pope Gregory the XV wanted to propagate the Catholic Faith and started the use of propaganda. During World War II propaganda was commonly used through the telling of lies - made up stories that evoked pride and a sense of a righteous cause. Select information was shared to cause people to have sympathy and support the cause. Misinformation was given out to confuse the situation. The government worked hand and hand with the media to keep the reports of casualties low in order to boost morale and make citizens feel they were doing the right thing by supporting the war. They also made citizens feel bad if they were not being supportive by allying them with the enemy. It was manipulation, and all countries involved in the war used it on their own citizens as well as on the enemy. The idea behind propaganda is to convince huge numbers of people to believe as you do, often through any measures necessary. It's purpose is to control your thinking. Although propaganda can seem good, usually it's twisting the truth in one form or another.

Propaganda is always a one sided point of view, which grossly distorts the truth by a bias slant put on the message conveyed. Usually there are falsehoods and over exaggerations that aim to convince and perhaps brainwash others to believe the same way. It’s meant to evoke passions and emotions to drive masses of people to action in behalf of its cause.

Typically propaganda revolves around an issue that is already known to the masses and is presenting its side of the argument, but never really getting to the meat of the issue so as to deflect any opposition. It speaks in generalities. It can be based on a presumption but never really give the details, in a sense it can become a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Propaganda seeks to support a political aim of a particular party so as to put them in power. Their goal is to change your understanding of a situation to win you to their cause.

Propaganda can come in many forms. Posters for example are placed around communities as a constant reminder and form of official announcement intended to create a sense of unity of agreement that is not really there. In more modern times the use of TV has become the primary outlet especially in time of political change or in time of war. Commercials are designed to beat down the opposition and make use of film footage to make their points. Also during times of war, leaflets are dropped on the enemy in attempts to convince them to surrender, to explain to them that they have been mislead and that they will be treated fairly if they stop fighting. Propaganda can also come in the form of billboards, news papers, radio broadcasts, movies, and now days by means of the internet.

Propaganda History

Propaganda has a long history that can be traced back through antiquity. The Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and every civilization up to the present day have participated in the use of propaganda. Officially there is no consensus as to a direct definition of propaganda. The intent of propaganda is to communicate a message to the masses with the sole purpose of having its intended audience respond how the propagandist desired. Propaganda is a persuasive message that calls people to a predetermined action. Propaganda is supposed to be a neutral

medium that when used can then become a device for good or bad which is determined by the sender and the receiver.

Unfortunately, due to the negative use of propaganda, it is viewed by most of the world as a dirty, awful thing. When most people think of propaganda they think of manipulation, lies, brain washing, or mind control. Although the negative aspects are a very popular form of propaganda there can be positive uses of propaganda such as informing the public about health risks and diseases.

Propaganda is used in a daily basis by the media, corporations, government, educational and religious institutions, plus many more. Large organizations work very hard to present effective propaganda to the public so as to influence their thought and decision making. Propaganda will seek to change peoples beliefs, direct their voting, tempt them into purchasing goods, or shape their understanding through education. Often times propaganda will hide, alter, or falsify facts and truths in order to convince the public to act certain way.

Propaganda is an ideology that seeks to either maintain the balance of power or to upset the balance and take a greater share. Often time’s propaganda will tip the balance of power by playing on the desires and emotions of its intended audience. It will seek to hide the past and throw history out the door so as to draw attention to the present situation.

One of the key elements of propaganda is for it to be current, it must be on the front lines of current events and quick to make its self-known while the public is still interested in the situations at hand. Some other important factors of effective propaganda are for it to be easily understood, memorable and available to the masses to experience and act upon. Propaganda with a simple phrase and iconic image is the most effective and remembered. Memorable propaganda is important for long term effectiveness so that the message will be at the forefront of an individuals thinking.

Propaganda seeks to play on the attitudes, behavior, senses, ideals, morals, values, and beliefs of the general public. Propaganda tries to make the recipient believe and feel as though the propagandist is on their side and sympathizes with the way they feel. Propaganda in reality is only interested in its own desired results.

Propaganda can be broken into three areas, white, black and Grey. White propaganda tends to be correct information from an identifiable source. Black propaganda tends to be all false information with the intent of manipulation. Grey propaganda consists of some truth some falsehoods, with its source identifiable at times.

The power of propaganda comes from people’s need for information. Information allows people to make decisions, giving them instructions, understanding and ideas. If propaganda can place itself as the source of information then it ill be accepted and trusted as truth. Propagandist do not want its identity to be revealed as then the credibility of their message is compromised, destroying its ability to control information, public opinion and behavior.

Throughout time propaganda has employed the latest technology to present its message. The quicker and more effective presentation of the propaganda to its recipients the more effect and will have on them especially since propaganda can be very time sensitive.

Today propaganda comes in many different forms. Some ways to distribute propaganda is by publications, documents, books, posters, stamps, leaflets, paintings, sculpture, symbols, radio, TV, internet, movies, signs, billboards, plays, rumor, meetings, parades, schools, and many more.

Propaganda is typically put out by minority groups or an elite group of people who want to have more power to control things. Propaganda can be most dangerous when used on under educated people, as propaganda will attempt to be their source of education. Propaganda tells people who do not think, how and what to think. Propaganda has already done the thinking for the lazy brain. True education teaches people how to think for themselves. Propaganda can be a human relation’s nightmare, as it seeks to direct people to accept and conform to a certain living standard.

Often times propaganda is considered a form of re-education as it attempts to train a person is a new way of thinking, a new set of ideas. With that in mind one needs to realize that everybody faces propaganda daily. People are either accepting or fighting against propaganda throughout every day.

Despite the fact that we are all faced with propaganda every day, this does not mean that the propaganda is effective or strong enough to cause us to act in its desired way. Effective propaganda must have incentives for change and must reach the masses quickly and when it matters the most. Unfortunately most effective propaganda is done in a discrete way now days as most people are aware of the manipulation, so keep an eye out, you might be in the process of being brain washed.
